The results are in! The United States Social Security Administration has recently published the results of the most popular baby names in 2007. The names tend to differ slightly depending on where in the United States you are, but the top ten baby names for both boys and girls are found all over the United States. Here are the top ten baby names for boys: 1. Jacob2. Michael3. Ethan4. Joshua5. Daniel6. Christopher7. Anthony8. William 9. Matthew 10. Andrew While there seems to be an increase in non-traditional names, especially among celebrities, it is clear that the most popular baby names are still the traditional names we are used to. Ready for the girls? Here are the top ten baby names for girls: 1. Emily2. Isabella3. Emma4. Ava5. Madison6. Sophia7. Olivia8. Abigail9. Hannah10. Elizabeth Elizabeth is enjoying a return the top ten this year after falling of the list for the past two years. Addison, falling slightly shy of the top ten list, comes in at number 11, no doubt riding the wave of the popular Addison Shepherd on Grey's Anatomy. Names seem to follow our pop culture as well. For instance, the character Austin on Days of our Lives no doubt led to an increase in the name Austin for boys. The name hit the top ten list for quite some time, though has now fallen to the number 48th spot.

Interestingly, Emily and Jacob have topped the lists for years. Emily has been number one on the list since 1996 and Jacob since 1999. They seem to be the name to beat! Of course, if you don't want to name your child one of the most popular baby names you can always take some clues from the celebrities. For instance, John Travolta and Kelly Preston named one of their children Jet. Certainly after Travolta's love of aircraft? We also have Poet, Soliel Moon Frye's daughter's, and Coco, David Arquette and Courtney Cox's adorable little girl, in the category of unique baby names. Naming your child can come from personal experience, family, culture, religion, or any other source you come across. Some people even want to avoid naming their baby from the top ten baby name list. There is no limit to the number of names out there and the number of choices of names for your new baby. Names are a personal choice, and when it comes to naming your little one you will know what to do. Follow your heart. You will know your little one's name when it comes to you! By Jennifer Metz

Top Baby Name Websites

What's in a name? Well, a lot, actually. A person's name is their first and foremost form of identity. When you are pregnant, one of the first things you might begin to think about is naming your child. Even before a woman gets pregnant, she likely has an idea of names she likes. The internet can be very helpful for finding names and helping you evaluate which names you like best. Some sites are more helpful than others, but I found all of these to be great for one reason or another. BabyNamesWorld.com This site is a fairly simple site that I found helpful because it lists names in a chart format that includes origin and meaning. The advanced search option on this page is also very helpful, as you can narrow it down to just boys names, or just girls names, and you can search for a specific meaning. For instance, you could search for a baby girl's name that the meaning contains the word "happy" and you would come up with several names such as "Aliza," "Beatrice," "Felicia," and "Jolette." This site also has a page where you can browse baby names by origin.
BabyNameGuide.com The name categories on this site are diverse. I like the list of Biblical baby names. They also have baby name lists based on moods, occupations, nature, Arthurian legend, and color, as well as several ethnic lists. Social Security Baby Name Site This website shows the popularity of baby names over time. You can look up a specific name to see how it has ranked in popularity over the years, or you can look through the list of the top 100 most popular names each year. You can also look at the top five names for each state. When I was choosing a name for my son, I wanted to be sure that I didn't pick a highly popular name, because I didn't want him to have several kids in his class with the same name. This website is great for checking baby name popularity. BabyCenter.comFirst, I just want to say that I love BabyCenter for many things. Pretty much any concern you have in pregnancy or about your infant, you can find information about it on this website. When it comes to baby names, at the link above (www.babycenter.com/babyname) you will find many helpful baby name resources. You can search names by number of syllables, see popularity of names all over the world (my son's name is the 8th most popular in Italy), and you can even create a poll to send to your friends to test out your favorite name choices. This was something I did with my son and it proved very helpful. One of the names I liked a lot rated very low, and it helped me decide against that name. BabyNames.com This website has several unique search categories. You can see a list of names that have been chosen by celebrities, such as Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt's baby, "Shiloh Nouvel," or Madonna's baby, "Lourdes Maria." You could also browse lists of names for Shakespeare, Lord of the Rings, Soap Operas, or Reality TV Shows. By Nicole Mohr

Top 10 Baby Names Listed

What's in a name? A clich?? Certainly! But it is meaningful just the same. Those of us who have brought children into this world, for the most part, spend a lot of time selecting what we think, or hope, will be that perfect name for our children – names that will be respected for all time. Sometimes we name our children after ourselves. Other times, we decide to name our offspring after their grandparents. Still, other times, couples will decide to honor famous athletes, television or big screen stars. No matter our motives, the fact of the matter is that our children need a name. Whether people like the choice or not, in most cases, the choice will be for life. Frank or Freda? Ashley or Anthony? Jim or Jane? Whatever they may by ... What's in a name? And, as a society, what are we choosing these days? Cleveland Evans is a professor at Bellevue University in Nebraska has told us. He is also president of the American Names Society. He keeps up with the trends and monitors the changes and, in cases with the top female names lately, what doesn't change. The Social Security Administration recently shared the most common names for boys and girls with the Associated Press.

Those who keep up with the trends will find that there is not much of a surprise among baby girls, as Evans indicates: 1) Emily 2) Emma 3) Madison 4) Abigail 5) Olivia 6) Isabella 7) Hannah 8) Samantha 9) Ava 10) Ashley Evans says that 'Emily' has topped the list for the last 10 years. Too, the second and third name, Emma and Madison, respectively, did not change from last year's list. “The whole question was whether Emma was going to beat out Emily this time,” Evans told The Associated Press. There was a change, though. The name 'Ava' was new to the list at No. 9. The story there is, perhaps, what a huge climb that name made in the last 15 or so years. The SSA rated Ava No. 952 in 1990. While the top girls' names have not changed in a decade, the boys' list did not have a change again this year. The top three names remain the same, according to the SSA. And biblical names continue to be prominent: 1) Jacob 2) Michael 3) Joshua 4) Matthew 5) Ethan 6) Andrew 7) Daniel 8) Anthony 9) Christopher 10) Joseph 'Anthony' was new to the list at No. 8. And what about pair? What do new-to-be parents decide to do about twins? According to the SSA: 1) Jacob with Joshua 2) Matthew with Michael 3) Daniel with David 4) Hope with Faith So, have fun. Whether you are planning your own family, or you just want to keep up with what is hot, or not, check out these lists. How do your tastes stack up? And, what's in a name? By Marc G. Auber

The Meanings of Top Baby Names

Each year the Social Security Administration releases a list of the top names. 2005's list is the most recent list available. Ever been curious about what the names mean? Read on to find out the meaning of some of 2005's top names. The most popular boy's name in 2005 was Jacob. Jacob is a biblical name: he was the father of the founders of the 12 tribes in Israel. His name means "holder of the heel" because he was born holding Esau's (his twin brother) heel. The #2 boy's name is Michael. The name is derived from a Hebrew word meaning "who is like God?" Michael is the only archangel in the Bible, and one of seven in the Hebrew faith. Michael was the leader of heaven's armies in the Book of Revelation. Next in the boy's list is Joshua. This name comes from the Hebrew name ?????????? (Yehoshu'a) meaning "Yahweh is salvation". In the Old Testament, Moses sent twelve spies into Canaan: Joshua was one of them. Interestingly, the name Jesus is derived from Joshua. The fourth most popular name for boys is Matthew. Matthew is an English version of a Greek form of a Hebrew name meaning "gift of Yahweh". Saint Matthew was a tax collector and one of the 12 apostles. Ethan, the fifth most popular boy's name, appears in the Hebrew Bible. He may have played cymbals in King David's court, and he wrote Psalm 89. The meaning of this name is strong and optimistic.

Emily, the most popular girl's name, is Latin in origin and means rival or emulating. The name may be derived from 'aemulus' which means trying to excel. The name may also be derived from the Greek work 'aimulos' meaning friendly or tender. Emma means universal, whole, or all embracing in German. The name could also be short for Erma, which means 'strong'. Emma may also be short for Emmanuelle. Madison, which is used for both girls and boys but listed as a girl's name by SSA, is the third most common girl's name. It is English in origin and originally appeared in the Middle Ages as Mad's son or son of Maud. The fourth most popular girl's name, Abigail, means "father of exaltation" in Hebrew. She was King David's third wife, and the name came into use during the 16th century in Britain. Lastly, Olivia is Latin in origin, meaning "olive tree". The name appeared in Shakespeare's "Twelfth Night". The olive tree is typically a symbol of fruitfulness or peace, and the name Olivia may be derived from this. By uncgrad

Most Popular Baby Names for 2007

I remember when I was in school there were about 10 Jennifer's, Jessica's and Kelly's. Back in 1982 these were the top trends in baby names. Now as a newborn baby photographer I have noticed a new trend in baby names. Last year it was "surnames" like Riley, Jackson and Carter. This year it's all about vintage and bringing back classic names. There are some truly beautiful baby names this year, especially when it comes to girl names. I can honestly say that 1 out of every 10 girls that I photograph are named Olivia. Olivia is probably the most popular girl name this year! Olivia is an English name, meaning Elf Army. Although the meaning may be a bit strange the name it's self is beautiful and probably the most popular baby girl name this year! Another very popular, vintage girl name is Sophia. Sophia meaning "wisdom" is of Greek origin. This is a beautiful very vintage name. In fact when I hear the name Sophia I sometimes think of the clever old woman from the Golden Girls. Another popular girls name is Isabelle, which is French and means "God is my oath".

This is a great religious name which always classic. Some other popular baby girl names are Eva, Maddison, Addison, Emily and Abigail. These are all very classic names. As far as boy names go many of the most popular names can be found in the bible! You really can't get any more classic then with biblical names such as Caleb, hebrew meaning rage like a dog. Another biblical name that is growing in popularity is Noah, also Hebrew meaning rest of peace. Probably one of the most popular baby names right now is Jacob, also Hebrew meaning supplanter. Mathew, also a biblical name is very popular this year. Some other non biblical names that are growing in popularity are Logan, Zander or Xander, and Owen. Another growing trend in baby names this year is multiple middle names. I have had parents list up to 4 middle names for their baby this year! And it is not uncommon to hear 2 middle names, it's definitely becoming the "norm" so to speak. Although this is a growing trend, keep in mind that you child will one day have to learn to spell and write their entire name! With so many beautiful vintage names to choose from who can decide?! I hope that my article has helped you in your baby name decision making! By Tashia M. Heath
